How dbeaver is put together

DBeaver is a free multi-platform desktop database tool for developers, SQL programmers, DBAs and analysts, written almost entirely in Java. It is built as an Eclipse RCP / OSGi plugin application (130+ plugins) assembled with Maven/Tycho into features and products, with a strict separation between headless 'model' plugins (data access, SQL parsing, drivers) and desktop 'UI' plugins (SWT/JFace editors), allowing the same back-end to be reused in CloudBeaver. Database connectivity is via JDBC/ODBC across 100+ database dialects, each implemented as an ext.* plugin; SQL is parsed with JSQLParser and Antlr4. The repo also contains SSH tunneling plugins, data transfer/GIS/Office integrations, a debugger framework, a headless test application, and AI (LLM chat) integration.

Major components

org.jkiss.dbeaver.model (+ model.jdbc, model.sql, model.lsm, model.lsp, model.nio, model.event, model.rcp)

Core headless data model: datasource abstraction, JDBC connectivity, SQL parsing/semantics, language server support, and platform application interfaces shared by desktop and CloudBeaver.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.registry

Plugin/application registry and lifecycle glue, including EclipsePluginApplicationImpl which wires the desktop platform (DesktopPlatform/DesktopUI) and preference stores.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.core + org.jkiss.dbeaver.ui.app.standalone/eclipse/msstore/devtools

Desktop application core and per-distribution application entry points that assemble the SWT/JFace rich client.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.ui.editors.* (sql, data, entity, erd, hex, json, connection, session, etc.)

Desktop UI editors: SQL editor, data grid, ER diagrams, entity/hex/json editors, connection management, and the navigator/search/dashboard/chart UI plugins.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.ext.* (postgresql, mysql, oracle, mssql, db2, snowflake, bigquery, clickhouse, duckdb, ~60 more)

Per-database driver/dialect plugins implementing metadata, SQL dialect, and capability extensions for each supported database over JDBC.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.net.ssh (+ jsch, sshj variants, ssh.ui)

SSH tunneling implementations (JSch and SSHJ backends) and their configuration UI for secure connections to databases.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.data.transfer / data.gis / data.office

Data import/export/migration pipelines, spatial (GIS) data handling, and Office-format (POI-based) integration.

org.jkiss.dbeaver.debug.core/debug.ui + org.jkiss.dbeaver.headless + launcher

Database debugger framework (DBGSession/breakpoints/stepping), headless OSGi test application, and DelegateMainLauncher for delegating startup to alternate main classes.

Over the past five weeks the DBeaver team shipped a steady stream of fixes and polish across its database tools, with a major push on AI features (chat improvements, dynamic model loading, account authentication) and a 26.2.0 release followed by a quick 26.2.1 patch. Security hardening was a recurring theme, including protection against zip path traversal during config import, HTML preview vulnerabilities, and safer shell command execution. Database-specific support also expanded with new drivers like GreptimeDB, Databricks data types, and ClickHouse/ClickHouse-related fixes.

Week by week

2026-08-24A patch-focused week bumping to version 26.2.1 while fixing UI glitches, connection handling, and security issues.latest6 changes

Fix

Safer configuration imports

Added a guard against malicious file paths inside zip archives when importing configurations, preventing files from being written outside their intended folder.

Fix

HTML preview security fix

Patched vulnerabilities in the HTML preview feature so viewing generated HTML is safer.

Fix

Fewer password prompts

The app no longer asks for a password when you are only creating a new connection rather than connecting to an existing one.

Feature

CSV export formula sanitizing option

Introduced an option that cleans spreadsheet formulas out of data during CSV export so exported values can't be interpreted as formulas.

Fix

ClickHouse date/time fix

Corrected how date and time values from ClickHouse databases are read and displayed.

Chore

Version bump to 26.2.1

Prepared a small follow-up release (26.2.1) packaging the week's fixes.

2026-08-17The busiest week of the period, dominated by AI integration work plus dozens of interface and stability fixes.6 changes

Feature

AI account authentication support

Users can now sign in to AI services with proper account authentication instead of only API keys.

Feature

Dynamic AI model loading

AI models are now loaded dynamically, so new models can appear without waiting for an app update.

Fix

Fixed AI-generated query execution

Queries produced by the AI assistant now run correctly instead of failing.

Feature

AI mistake warning in chat

The AI chat now shows a warning reminding users that AI answers can contain mistakes.

Fix

Dark theme navigator background

Attempted a fix for the database navigator showing an incorrect background color in dark mode.

Fix

Stale table header trim on Linux

Fixed table headers being visually cut off or stale on Linux systems.

2026-08-10Preparation for the 26.2.0 release, with the Git feature moved to the Pro edition and many connection and driver fixes.6 changes

Refactor

Git feature moved to PRO edition

Version-control (Git) functionality was restructured so it ships only with the paid Pro product.

Chore

Version bump to 26.2.0

Bumped the codebase to prepare the 26.2.0 release.

Fix

ClickHouse maps handling fixed

Corrected how ClickHouse's map-style data types are displayed and edited.

Fix

GIS viewer fixes

Fixed map boundary formatting and made the spatial/GIS viewer work in older embedded web engines.

Fix

BigQuery driver property reset fix

Resetting driver properties for BigQuery connections no longer misbehaves.

Fix

MySQL option file password quoting

Passwords in MySQL option files are now properly quoted so special characters don't break connections.

2026-08-03New database support arrived alongside AI cleanup and a batch of editor and data-transfer fixes.6 changes

Feature

GreptimeDB driver support

Added built-in connectivity for GreptimeDB, a time-series database.

Databricks data type support

DBeaver now understands Databricks-specific column types when browsing and editing tables.

Feature

Colorized GIS data using CSS colors

Geographic/map data can now be colored on the map using standard CSS color values.
